❊ Purpose
Why Bike Bus
A bike bus is a joyful, community-powered way for children and adults to ride together to and from school—along a set route and schedule—just like a traditional yellow bus, but a whole lot more fun.
Bike Bus Edmonton, a non-profit initiative, is bringing this movement to schools across the Edmonton area, transforming how we move through our city. Together, we’re building something better—one ride, one family, one neighbourhood at a time.
What We’re Building Together
Build Community
Riding together creates connection. Students, parents, and volunteers form bonds that strengthen neighbourhoods and foster a sense of belonging.
Empower Children
When kids ride, they gain confidence, independence, and lifelong habits of active transportation. We’re shaping healthier individuals and more sustainable communities.
Boost Learning
A fun, social, and active start to the day improves focus and cognitive performance in the classroom.
Champion Safety
Bike Bus rides are built on a foundation of safety. Children learn real-world riding skills in a supervised, supportive environment.
Drive Change
Every successful ride shows local leaders that active transportation works. Bike Bus Edmonton helps spark investment in safer streets and better infrastructure for everyone.
❊ FAQs
You’ve got questions,
we’ve got answers
-
Safety is at the heart of every bike bus ride. Each ride is led by adult volunteers empowered to succeed—including a pilot, sweeper, and crossing supervisor—who follow detailed safety procedures. Riders are taught how to make safe decisions, and emergency protocols are in place for things like weather, mechanical issues, or medical events. We also provide safety instructions before and during every ride and encourage parents to join if their child is new to riding.
-
Just once. A registration lasts all season, and once you’re registered you can join any ride for the school year.
Every person who joins in our ride needs to be registered, including parents.
Registering is free, online, and instant.
-
You're always welcome to ride with your child—and we recommend joining for their first ride. It’s a great way to see how the bike bus works and to support your child as they build confidence.
When your child is comfortable riding steadily, following instructions, and making basic safety decisions with support from our leaders, they’re welcome to ride independently. If they’re not quite ready to ride at all, they can still join as a passenger on your bike using a trailer, cargo bike, or child seat.
Whether you're riding with your child or just coming along for the fun, we’re happy to have you!
-
Once you're registered, you're welcome to hop in anywhere along the route—just join the fun when the bike bus rolls by!
For the best experience, we encourage families to start from one of our designated Meeting Zones whenever possible. These are safe, off-street gathering spots with scheduled times where riders can:
Meet up and get a warm welcome
Hear a quick safety briefing
Start the ride together as a group
Meeting Zones help keep things smooth, safe, and social—especially for new riders. Whether you're joining at a zone or along the way, we're excited to ride with you!

The bike bus uses a team of adult volunteers to keep the group safe and cohesive. A pilot leads from the front, setting the pace and regrouping riders before crossings. A sweeper rides at the back to ensure no one is left behind. A crossing supervisor helps riders navigate intersections safely and returns to the front after each crossing.
Before every crossing, the group waits for the sweeper to arrive and confirm the group is together. If the group gets separated, leaders pause to regroup at designated meeting zones. These strategies help the bike bus move as one joyful, visible, and safe unit.
-
The bike bus rides in most weather conditions—including rain and winter—but safety always comes first. Rides may be cancelled for severe weather (like thunderstorms or extreme cold), poor road conditions, or lightning. Morning cancellations are sent early enough for families to use the regular school bus instead.
Leaders monitor weather alerts and have clear protocols for mid-ride incidents, including designated safety locations along the route.
All cancellations and ride alerts are sent directly to you by text message, so you’re always informed.
